Sound & Typography analysis

The shallows:

This opening sequence was not a title sequence because it showed the beginnings of the plot. The first sound you hear in this scene is the noise of the waves crashing on the sand. then small normal non dramatic writing appears in the centre of the screen. this font had a slight shadow behind it, this connects it to the name of the movie. This writing said, " Columbia pictures presents". This is done so it looks out of place and odd. Next you hear the sound of a boy playing with a boy and his breathing. More writing comes on screen, the font they used was the same as the previous righting. This shows consistency. The sound of the boy stopped then unsetting non-diegetic music started to play. This was done so the thing on screen would be focused on and related to something scary. The music dies down as he looks at the helmet. You can now hear diegetic sounds of birds and him breathing. When is cuts to a black screen creepy music is all that you can hear then the title of the film slowly fades in. This writing is simple and doesn't make you think its a thriller but with the music it makes the title seem like something to be feared.

Mad Max: Fury Road:

This opening starts of with the sound of a mans
voice without any images. His voice sounds serious and old, (like he's been through a lot). Then the sound of screams and gun fire along with a old, maybe broken radio in the background. Then you hear lots of different people like presenters talking about killings and the world chaos. There are also sounds of static.

While this is begin said there is writing stating the main actors of the film. This writing is placed is a slightly random placing with two different fonts. One for the names of the actors (that looks rough and has the texture of a rotting or broken wall, with a light brown colour) and one for the characters names (that looks scratchy and jagged with a red colour). This is done so the staring actors/actresses are addressed and this causes more popularity of the film. The fonts are like that so it shows that this film will be rough and it connects it to an acton film. When the screen goes back again the mans voice comes back telling the audience about his past life. The next sounds are of reporters talking about how mankind has gone rouge, with the sounds of explosions, sirens and scratchy noises in the background.

Gone Girl:

At the beginning of this opening the first thing you hear is a eire music then small writing comes one the screen for a brief moment. This makes the views think it's odd and spooky. As the music goes on and the small writing comes on and off the screen a man beings to talk in a relaxed tone talking about his wife. Theres a slight eco behind his voice. His tone is one that makes you think he's creepy and a sociopath because what he's saying doesn't match his tone. The music starts to grow louder to highlight the importance in what he's saying.

Barthes codes

Barthes codes:

  • Hermeneutic
  • Proairetic
  • Semantic
  • Symbolic
  • Referential

You'll be able to fine the meaning to all of these codes in the link below:

Here are some examples of each code...

Hermeneutic:
A person walks into a blood filled room and sees it leading away so they follow it, however the blood leads to nothing. This will leave enigmas in the viewers mind, such as: "Who's blood is that?" "How did it end up there?" " where is the blood leading too?" "Who is the person who found the blood?" Ect...
This code is effective in thrillers and used most frequently because it pulls in the views intriguing them to find the answers to all there unanswered questions.

Proairetic:
A person is walking down the street but a tile full from the building above (The viewer is now wondering if he's going to be hit by the tile).  The the person jumps back into the road to avoid the falling tile, but there is a on coming car (Now the viewer is wondering if the person will be hit by the car).
This code also works well in thrillers because the question of whats going to happen next never stops, this is done so that the viewer will never get bored of the narrative and will continue to be intrigued in the plot.

Semantic:
A man kills another man but is saddened by it. The viewer will then ask why or if it means more then what it looks. Such as: he could have no choice but to kill him but he also had another reason for doing so.

Symbolic:
The main character of the movie is being brutally beaten to death but he's turns to smile at his tied up wife. This creates a mood and causes the viewer to fill sad and angry for the main character.

Referential:
A Historian comes across a old statue and he finds out information about it. This information tends to be true in the referential code.
